7 Search Engines That You Can't Afford to Miss
While Google is the number one search engine, and will most likely continue to be that for a number of years, there is thousands of lesser search engines that work hard to gain a piece of the search marketplace for themselves.
{The market for search is dominated by a few giants. According to a report by comScore the market for search in October 2009 was dominated by Google (65.4%), Yahoo (18.0%), Microsoft (9.9%), Ask (3.9%) and AOL (2.9%), MapQuest, eBay, craigslist, Fox, MySpace, Facebook and Amazon.}
With the search market valued at $300 Billion that makes every single 1% worth $3 Billion when selling the company and you would do well by conquering just a 0.1% piece of that cake. That's why we will continue to see a growing number of start up search engines.
This is the top 7 search engines that the 2010 news stories are likely to gossip about. New or old, all of them have in common that they deliver high quality search results and they have been innovating in 2009.
Cuil
Cuil is one of the few new search engines that is competing head to head with Google on index size and by claiming to be the worlds biggest search engine, managers and ex Googlers Anna Patterson and Russell Power has a lot to deliver.
The initial launch in 2008 was hampered by server so overloaded that they spit out exceptionally bad search results, but visiting Cuil you will find that the search results are good and the Explore by Category functionality down to the right is one of the best.
DuckDuckGo
Sporting a Zero-click fact box with facts about your search term, categories to refine your search and a special designation for the official site for the search term this search engine combines results from Yahoo BOSS, Wikipedia and it's own crawler DuckDuckBot to give you neat and pretty useful search results.
DuckDuckGo was launched in September 2008 by Gabriel Weinberg and is a private venture with a steady growth in 2009. Watch out for this search engine in 2010, it's got a nice niche carved out for itself
Spezify
A totally cool search engine, Spezify. The search results are showcased as photos and newspaper clippings pasted all over the computer screen, the clippings being made of one paragraph quotes from the result web site. Instead of clicking back and forth between websites to decide which one provides you an answer you can read the brief clippings and get a decent enough overview that you often can pick the right website on the first or second try.
It's also a excellent brainstorming tool. You'll get a log of new ideas for your article or blog post just by typing your keyword into the search box and watching the resulting mix of clippings and photos.
Secret Search Engine Labs
This search engine ranks sites in a way slightly different than the big mainstream search engines. As Google gives priority to aged and large sites, many new, small-scale and relevant sites are difficult to find in their search results. Secret Search Engine Labs ranks web pages based on page contents and links using their trademark CashRank algorithm to filter out junk content.
Secret Search Engine Labs was initiated in 2007 by Simon Byholm, a software engineer and entrepreneur from Finland, and in addition to relevant and different search results it aims to provide tools and information for website owners on how webpages are ranked.
Bing
Bing is a re-branded Microsoft's Live Search that was previously MSN Search. Now Microsoft has managed to grab almost 10% of the marketplace for web search by running an aggressive marketing campaign. The attention of media during the re-launch has spurred innovation adding new functions like the daily change in background photo, suggested topics and popularity trends.
Watch Bing closely during 2010 as Microsoft has finally taken some real action to grow their market share and it's likely that you will see more changes over time.
Blekko
With a management that has worked at Topix, Google, AOL and Netscape Search this startup search engine is as secretive as Google about what they will do next and when.
At the time of writing in early December 2009 they have still not launched but with the launch scheduled for the end of 2009 this search engine will make big news in 2010. We can only hope it's good and exciting news.
Monitter
This is a real-time Twitter monitor with reply and re-tweet options. You enter three keywords and after some processing the latest tweets that contains your keywords start to roll down the screen in three separate columns. When you want to monitor you niche or area of expertise or if you just want to keep an eye on the conversation this is a neat tool.
What About The Rest?
I think you already know that Google is innovating and it's pretty sure they will make some noise in 2010. Wolfram Alpha is interesting as it is the only major search engine that makes the results from data.
There's a multitude of social, real-time or just weird search engines starting up and there's no telling if one of them develops into the next Twitter and makes a permanent mark in the search market. You will find info on the majority of them in this list of search engines, in this other search engine list or on AltSearchengines.com a blog that reviews just about every new search engine launched.
After several years of Google - Yahoo - Microsoft rule there is finally signs of radical changes to the search landscape. There's so much new technology on display. There's semantic search, visual presentation, real-time search and socially powered search engines popping up. If nothing else is accomplished at least the old giants will have to adopt the new technology to stay relevant, giving us better search results in the process.
10 Great Albums of 2011 That Happen to Have Been Made by Women (Ms. Magazine)
Almost anywhere you looked, 2011 seemed like a banner year for women in music.
Remember how exciting it was when the immensely talented Esperanza Spalding
pissed off all those Justin Bieber fans and won the Best New Artist Grammy
back in February? Remember when Adele went quadruple-platinum and became a
pretty badass role model for those [...]
