There are several mines in New Mexico, but the majority of them are not technically "open to the public". Unfortunately because of dumb people who hurt themselves in abandoned mines, they are slowly being closed off. To me, this is just natural selection. In southeastern New Mexico is the Ora Grande region. This is an itty-bitty town with an abandoned mining region nearby. The is a small turquoise mine there, but the last time I was there, I noticed the owner plowed over the entrance because he did not want people to go in there. There are several other mine there to explore. Lots of hematite, garnets, chrisacola (sp). Just look it up online. There was nice mine near Las Cruses where you could get Wolfenite, but they blocked it off after some kids died in it. I've been to other mines in NM to collect fluorite, galena, Silver.... but I cant remember where they are off the top of my head.
