circle4's questionsPart a)Find the geometric probability of throwing a dart and hitting the red circle.Part b) Find the geometric probability of throwing a dart and hitting the blue or green rings.Part c)Find the geometric probability of throwing a dart and hitting the yellow ring using your answers for parts a&b
Hi,
Circle 1
When the radius = 5 units, the area of the entire circle is π(5)² or 78.5. The red area is 120/360 or ⅓ of the circle's area or 26.17.
the purple area is 60/360 or 1/6 of the circle's area or 13.08.The yellow area is 90/360 or ¼ of the circle's area or 19.63.
Circle 2
With a radius of 9, the area of the entire circle is π(9)² or 254.34. Since the one angle is 100°, the other angle is 260°.
The area of the green part of the circle is 260/360(254.34) = 183.69.
Circle 3
With a radius of 5, the area of the entire circle is π(5)² or
or 78.5. The area of the sector with a 112° angle is 112/360(78.5) = 24.42. Half the base of the unshaded triangle is 4 and with a radius of 5, the height of the triangle is √(5² - 4²) = 3. The area of that entire triangle with the 112° angle is A = ½(8)(3) = 12. The shaded blue segment has an area of 24.42 - 12 = 12.42.
Circle 4
The area of the red circle is 4π.
The area of the yellow ring around it is π(5)² - π(2)² = 25π - 4π = 21π.
The area of the blue ring around it is π(8)² - π(5)² = 64π - 25π = 39π.
The area of the green ring around it is π(11)² - π(8)² = 121π - 64π = 57π.
The entire target has an area of 121π.
a) The geometric probability of throwing a dart and hitting the red circle is 4π/121π = 4/121 = .033 = 3.3%.
b) The geometric probability of throwing a dart and hitting the blue or green rings is (39π + 57π)/121π = 96 π/121π = 96/121 = .793 = 79.3%.
c) The geometric probability of throwing a dart and hitting the yellow ring using your answers for parts a&b is:
1 - (4/121 + 96/121) = 21/121 = .174 = 17.4%
I hope that helps!!
