Avast! Tropical paradises often look rather similar on paper. Beautiful beaches and endless oceans. But the cultural history of a place is essential to your choice. Of course, 'history' is broadly something that every place has in some way or form. But whereas you may go on Thailand holidays to experience thousands of years of Asian culture and mysticism, sometimes you want history that just appeals to the five year old inside you.
Who doesn't love Pirates? (So long as they're from 300 years in the past at least) And if you love pirates, you go on Caribbean Holidays. Simple. Piracy in the Caribbean was in its so called 'golden age' between the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. This was a time when the colonial powers of Spain, France, Holland and England were constantly warring with each other in Europe, as well as disputing ownership of the colonies themselves. Even the British, whose naval power grew massively during this period, found it difficult to spare reinforcements to the Caribbean with the European wars ongoing. With massive gaps in their defense capabilities, Governors were forced to rely on mercenary ships.
However, these mercenaries weren't loyal and were often engaging in unsanctioned activities beyond raids on shipping of the opposing powers. This period wasn't to last though, and the massive colonial navies of the early 18th Century left the mercenaries unemployed. The hired ships were then unwilling to simply return to obscurity and (possibly) poverty. Illegal activity was the inevitable answer. Eventually, the colonial powers overpowered the pirate threat.
One town that appears again and again in pirate history and myth is Tortuga, an actual island off the shore of Haiti. Unfortunately, with the current threat of a cholera epidemic in the wake of the 2010 Earthquake, many tourists will be looking for an alternative pirate town. A great alternative is Kingston, Jamaica. Nearby historical Port Royale is currently being developed as an expansive tourist site specifically to cater to tourists fascinated by 17th and 18th Century history.
