MAKING WEDDING ANNIVERSARIES COUNT.... FROM LINEN TO LEATHER
Why is it that some people are able to find the perfect gift for every occasion whilst others can spend days in the shops and still come out empty handed?.
Some find the job of choosing gifts exciting, others find it exhausting...but spouses - when it comes to choosing wedding anniversary gifts - there’s an ‘official’ list of what you should get according to the year, which makes shopping a whole lot easier. There’s actually more than one list - traditional ones from the US and the UK and a modern version which has gift suggestions (from clocks to crystal, musical instruments to bed linen and manchester and desk sets to diamonds) for every single year of marriage from one to 100 !.
The traditions may vary from country to country and have changed over time, but there are some anniversaries that are well-established and recognised across the board. These include silver (25th), gold (50th), diamond (60th..and any other day of the year too!) and platinum (70th).
Following are some of the examples of the differences between the ‘old’ list and the ‘modern’ one:
For the first anniversary, the traditional gift category was paper, whilst the modern is clocks and for the fourth one, the traditional was linen and silk whereas now it is appliances (much more modern!). A better swap comes in the 8th anniversary where linen and lace has replaced the traditional gifts of bronze or salt (depending on whether you were in the US or the UK). Now that’s a no-brainer !.
The modern list is also much more likely to appeal to those who like jewellery - with coloured gems and pearls replacing the silk and fine linen bedding of old for the 12th anniversary, and rubies, jade, opal, sapphire, amethyst and of course, diamonds all featuring prominently.
No-one is expected to stick to the categories on the list, but it is a useful guide when you’re stuck for gift ideas. After all, no-one’s going to say no to crystal and glass (3rd), silverware (5th), furniture (17th), textiles - think dreamy percale sheets and sumptuous bed linen (13th) or even a musical instrument on their 24th. Have fun !

International Jewelry Fair in Hong Kong Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012. Rising
incomes in China, which is the world's No. 2 economy, have resulted in a surge
in demand for gold jewelry and other luxury goods. China became the world's
largest market for gold jewelry in the second half of 2011 as demand rose in
every quarter, the World Gold Council said in its annual report. (AP Photo/Kin
